A Calmer Way to Travel Between Heathrow and London
Heathrow is the UK’s busiest airport and sits around 16 miles west of central London, beyond the M25 junctions 14 and 15. The train is quick if you are travelling light and staying near a station, but most journeys do not start or end at Paddington. With heavy cases, children, an early flight or a late arrival, a pre-booked taxi takes you from your front door to the terminal, or from arrivals straight to your hotel, home or office, without changes or queues.
Soho Cars has been running Heathrow transfers from our base in Soho, W1, since 1993. We serve all four terminals, every London borough and onward journeys across the UK. Every booking comes with a TfL-licensed driver, a fixed fare and flight monitoring on arrivals, and if you need something beyond our standard fleet, we can arrange it on request. Flying from another airport? See all of our London airport transfers. Landing for a busy day of meetings? Keep the same car and driver with our hourly as directed hire.

Journey Times
How Long Is a Taxi From Heathrow to London?
Most journeys between Heathrow and central London take 45 to 75 minutes. The exact time depends on where in London you are going, the hour you travel and which terminal you use: Terminals 2 and 3 sit in the central area off the M4 spur, while Terminal 5 is on the western edge and Terminal 4 is on the southern side, reached from the A30 and M25.
The times in the table are typical door-to-door journeys outside the worst of rush hour. Your driver picks the quickest route on the day using live traffic, and your fare stays the same whichever way they go.
Driver’s tip
The M4 and A4 into London are busiest from around 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm on weekdays. For a morning flight, book your pickup earlier than you think you need; for a rush-hour arrival, expect the upper end of the times shown.

Terminal Guide
Heathrow Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 at a Glance
Your terminal is set by your airline, so check your booking confirmation before you travel. Airline allocations change from time to time, and our team can check the latest information for you.
Terminal 2
The Queen’s Terminal
Home to most Star Alliance airlines, including Lufthansa, United, Air Canada and Singapore Airlines, plus Aer Lingus. It shares the central terminal area with Terminal 3, reached from the M4 spur.
Terminal 3
Long-haul & oneworld
Used by Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and several oneworld partners such as American Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Qantas. It is a short walk from Terminal 2 in the central terminal area.
Terminal 4
The southern terminal
Serves many SkyTeam, Middle Eastern and Asian carriers. It sits on the south side of the airport, so allow a little extra time if you are coming from the M4 side.
Terminal 5
British Airways
The main base for British Airways and Iberia, on the western edge of the airport with its own road access from the M25. One of the busiest terminals for both departures and arrivals.
Arrivals
Meeting your driver
Give us your flight number and terminal when you book. Your driver monitors your flight, then meets you inside the arrivals hall and helps with your luggage to the car.
Departures
Dropping you off
Your driver takes you to the departures forecourt of your terminal. Heathrow’s Terminal Drop-Off Charge applies to every vehicle using the forecourts, and we confirm how airport charges are handled when we give you your fixed fare.

What Is the Best Way From Heathrow to London?
There is no single best option for everyone. It depends on where you are going, how much luggage you have, how many of you are travelling and what time you land. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose.
Door to door
Pre-booked taxi
Best for: families, groups, heavy luggage, early or late flights, and anyone not staying next to a station. Your driver meets you in arrivals and the fare is fixed.
Bear in mind: road traffic can add time at peak hours, so allow a buffer for departures.
Fastest to Paddington
Heathrow Express
Best for: solo travellers with light bags heading to the Paddington area. Trains take around 15 minutes.
Bear in mind: you will usually need a second journey from Paddington to your final address.
Rail across London
Elizabeth line
Best for: travelling light to stations such as Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road or the City without changing trains.
Bear in mind: journeys take longer than the Express, and stairs, crowds and luggage can make it hard work.
Budget Tube
Piccadilly line
Best for: the lowest-cost route into west and central London when you have time and little luggage.
Bear in mind: it is the slowest option into central London and trains get crowded at peak times.
No booking needed
Black cab rank
Best for: a last-minute ride when you have not booked anything. Ranks operate outside each terminal.
Bear in mind: fares are metered, so the cost rises with traffic, and queues can be long at busy times.
On demand
App ride-hailing
Best for: short-notice trips when you are happy to wait for a car to be assigned at the pickup point.
Bear in mind: prices can surge at busy times and you meet the car at a designated pickup area, not in arrivals.
Choose Your Car for Heathrow
Match the car to your luggage, not just your passengers. Long-haul travellers usually need more boot space than they expect: the Passat Estate suits two people with large cases, the Sharan suits a family of five or six, and the 8-seat Vito takes a whole group and their bags in one booking. For VIP arrivals, choose an executive Mercedes, the Range Rover or the Rolls-Royce Phantom.

Heathrow Travel Tips From Our Drivers
After three decades of Heathrow runs, these are the questions we answer most often. A few minutes of planning makes the journey to or from the airport far smoother.
01
How early should I leave for Heathrow?
Airlines generally ask you to arrive around three hours before a long-haul flight and two hours before a short-haul one. Add your journey time from the table above and a buffer for traffic, especially for morning departures.
02
What if my flight is early or delayed?
We monitor your flight, so your driver adjusts to your actual landing time. Collections include 40 minutes of free waiting for European flights and one hour for international flights, after which waiting is charged in 15-minute increments.
03
Where exactly will I meet my driver?
Inside the arrivals hall of your terminal once you have cleared passport control and collected your bags. Keep your phone on after landing in case your driver needs to reach you.
04
Travelling with children?
Child seats are available on request, subject to availability. Please ask when you book and tell us the age of each child so we can prepare the right seats.
05
Large groups and extra luggage
Our Mercedes Vito carries up to eight passengers with luggage. For bigger groups, golf bags, skis or extra cases, tell us when you book and we can arrange additional or larger vehicles.
06
Payment and cancellations
Pay in cash or by any major card. Cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before pickup; later cancellations may be charged in full. See our terms and conditions.
